world

What do you want to tell me about the world?

Scott: Well, the world is the only – maybe the only place – but the only place in the galaxy with living people.

Helen: Lots of people live in different countries.

Scott: That’s still the world.

Helen: Some people live in a different world.

Scott: Aliens live in a different world.

Helen: Everyone lives in a different part of the world.

Scott: Yes, in a different part.

Helen: You know what I mean? If you know what I mean, you mean what I say?

Scott: The world has some ocean.

The world has some ocean?

Scott: On a map of the world. On a globe of the world, it may look like lots of different countries, but there’s just mostly green.

And what else?

Scott: It might be nighttime in one part, but it won’t be in some other part.

Why?

Scott: The sun is on different places of the world. Let’s say this is the sun and this is the world – this bit gets the sun and it’s nighttime on the other side. Up here, it might be the middle of the day. Here, it would be nearly the end – here it would be the end of the day and they might be having different or something…

What about the moon?

Scott: The moon only gets its light from the stars.

Where does the sun go when it sets?

Scott: It must be at the other side of the world.

You know, some people used to think the world was flat.

Scott: But we don’t.

Does that seem silly?

Scott: Seems silly that it would be flat.

Some people might think it’s silly that the world’s round.

Scott: Little bit silly – but lots of planets are round, nearly all.

Which ones aren’t?

Scott: Black holes might have some bits missing because it’s been pressed in on both sides.

Any others?

Scott: Well, not really… that’s the only thing I can think of.
